Tungabhadra Dam Gate Washed Away by Floods
Tungabhadra Dam Gate | Hospet: In Karnataka, a gate at the Tungabhadra Dam was washed away by floods on Saturday night.
The 19th gate was lost after a chain link broke, leading to a significant loss of water. Millions of cusecs of water have already been wasted, with about 60 TMC potentially lost.
The dam is receiving a lot of water due to recent rains in Shimoga.
Currently, one lakh cusecs of floodwater is being sent from the Tungabhadra Dam to the Sunkesula project. Officials are warning people living near the river to stay alert.

The area will keep experiencing flood problems until the gate is repaired. High water levels are also making rescue efforts harder. Repairs will begin once the floodwaters decrease.
Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar Dams Nearly Full; Pulichintala Has 10 TMC Buffer
Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar dams are nearly at full capacity, while Pulichintala still has a 10 TMC buffer. With at least 30 to 40 TMC of water expected from the Tungabhadra Dam, it is crucial to release water to all canals at full capacity. Farmers in Anantapur and West Kurnool, who rely on water from the HLC and LLC canals that originate from the Tungabhadra Dam, may face difficulties due to this incident. Officials recommend operating the Handri-Neeva lift at Mallya at full capacity and making efforts to fill the Gedipalli and Gollapalli dams to mitigate the impact of the situation.
Minister Payyavula Keshav’s Response
State Finance Minister Payyavula Keshav has addressed the issue of the broken gate wire at the Tungabhadra reservoir. Farmers have expressed concern over the incident, which affects the Anantapur and Kurnool districts. Keshav mentioned that he has consulted with both retired and current experts on the dam. He noted that the state government is taking urgent steps to prevent unnecessary water loss. Given the age of the dam, installing a new locking system is challenging.
