Union Gabinet Given Green Signal For 'One Nation-One Election"

Delhi/Hyderabad, Sept 18 (Maxim News): Central Cabinet has taken a sensational decision. The Union Cabinet has given the green signal for “One Nation-One Elections“. The Cabinet approved the report given by the Ram Nath Kovind Committee.

The Center will introduce this bill in the winter session of Parliament. As per the instructions given in this report, it seems that as the first step, elections to the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies will be held simultaneously. The committee recommended that local body elections should also be held within 100 days of the Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections being held simultaneously. With this, the entire country can hold elections at all levels within a fixed period. At present four states, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Odisha are holding Lok Sabha and Assembly elections at the same time. Parliament and Assembly elections are not being held at the same time in other states.

The Center has constituted a high-level committee under the chairmanship of former President Ram Nath Kovind to work on this proposal. The committee submitted its report to the Center in March. This committee approached 62 political parties, 32 of them supported One Nation, One Election. Meanwhile, 15 parties opposed it. Another 15 parties did not respond.

RECOMMENDATION OF THE COMMITTEE

Elections to Lok Sabha and State Assemblies should be held simultaneously

Elections to local bodies such as municipalities and panchayats should be held within 100 days.

a team should be constituted to monitor the implementation process of these recommendations

It recommended to the Center important issues like a common voter list, and a single voter identity card system, which should be prepared by the Central Election Commission (ECI) in consultation with state election authorities. (Maxim News)
