Anna University Rape Case Raises Public Outrage And Turns Political

Hyderabad, Jan 11 (Maxim News): A horrific crime has taken place in Tamil Nadu, following the brutal rape of a 19-year-old engineering student at Anna University on December 23. The victim, who was with her male friend, was allegedly attacked and sexually assaulted on the campus by Gnanasekaran, a roadside biryani vendor with a criminal history. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of women on university campuses and the handling of such cases by the police.

The accused, Ganesakaran, was arrested in short time, but the case took a turn when personal information and the FIR about the victim was leaked, leading to accusations of police negligence. In response to this, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin initially placed blame on the National Informatics Centre (NIC) for the breach. However, he later acknowledged that the state police had acted quickly to address the issue, assuring that the leak would be thoroughly investigated.

CM Denies The Allegations

The case quickly became a focal point of political debate. Chief Minister Stalin denied allegations that the accused had ties to the ruling DMK party, stating that Ganesakaran was merely a sympathizer of the party. Stalin condemned attempts by the opposition to politicize the crime, emphasizing that the state government had no role in protecting the accused. He further assured the public that strict action would be taken against anyone found involved in the crime or the leak of sensitive information.

CM Announces A Women-Only Special Investigation Team

In an effort to restore public confidence, the Chief Minister announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on December 30, consisting of three senior IPS officers, deputy commissioners of police- Bhukya Sneha Priya, Ayman Jamal and S Brinda. Stalin also pledged to ensure a swift investigation, with a charge sheet expected within 60 days.

To address the growing concern over women’s safety, Stalin introduced two significant bills in the state assembly aimed at strengthening protection for women across Tamil Nadu. The first bill, to amend the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (Amendment) Bill, 1998 and the Bill to amend the Bharatiya Nyaya Anahita, 2023, and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The new measures include the installation of surveillance cameras in public spaces, enhancing the ability of law enforcement to monitor and respond to potential threats. The bills also propose harsher penalties for crimes against women, ensuring greater accountability and deterrence.

In the face of this heartbreaking crime, Tamil Nadu’s government is promising a rigorous investigation and swift legal action, underscoring its commitment to tackling violence against women and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
