The Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (TGBIE) has drawn plans to introduce internal assessment for the intermediate students opting for the commerce and arts streams from 2025-26. As per the plan, which is with the Chief Minister’s Office for approval, four internal assessments will be conducted with each assessment comprising five marks.

If the proposed initiative gets the nod, the intermediate exams for commerce and arts will be conducted for 80 marks and 20 marks will be for internal assessment. The new initiative was proposed during the recent syllabus revision committee meeting with the subject experts suggesting internal assessments for intermediate students as well.

According to sources, some central universities experts who took part in the subject committee meeting raised serious concerns about lack of necessary research skills among students when enrolling for the undergraduate courses in the universities. They recommended introducing internal assessment with hands-on and experiential learning for students from the first year intermediate.

However, this recommendation was contended by some experts, who raised concerns about private and corporate junior colleges favouring their students and awarding full scores in internal assessments.
