India Takes Strong Steps Against Pakistan After Pahalgam Terror Attack

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, speaking to the media, said India will make sure the attackers are punished and those who support them are held responsible.

Here are the five major steps India is taking:

  1. Suspension of Indus Waters Treaty
India has put the Indus Waters Treaty on hold. This treaty, signed in 1960, allows both countries to share river waters. It will stay suspended until Pakistan stops supporting terrorism across the border in a clear and permanent way.
  2. Closing the Attari Border Checkpost
The Attari Integrated Checkpost, near Amritsar, will be closed immediately. Pakistani citizens currently in India with valid documents can return through this checkpost before May 1.
  3. Visa Restrictions for Pakistani Citizens
India has cancelled the SAARC visa exemption for Pakistani nationals. All Specific Purpose Work Visas (SPES) issued to Pakistani citizens are now invalid. Anyone in India on such a visa must leave within 48 hours.
  4. Diplomats Expelled
Defence, military, naval, and air advisors at the Pakistani High Commission in Delhi have been declared persona non grata and given one week to leave India. India will also withdraw its own advisors from its High Commission in Islamabad. These roles are now completely removed.
  5. Cut in Embassy Staff
Both countries will reduce their diplomatic staff in each other’s embassies from 55 to 30 by May 1. Five support staff working with military advisors will also be sent back.

Government Condemns the Attack

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) was given full details of the Pahalgam attack, in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were killed. The CCS strongly condemned the attack, offered condolences to the victims’ families, and appreciated the public’s strong support for India’s stand against terrorism.

The CCS also ordered all security forces to stay on high alert across the country.

“The people behind this attack will be brought to justice,” said Foreign Secretary Misri. “Just like we succeeded in the extradition of terrorist Tahawwur Rana, we will not stop chasing those who plan or carry out terror attacks against India.”
