Hyderabad Rain: Unsafe Buildings Under GHMC Scanner

Hyderabad Rain | Hyderabad, May 30: In view of the identification of dilapidated buildings in the Greater Hyderabad, GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan has instructed officials to take stringent measures to prevent loss of life and property.

The Commissioner held a video conference from his chamber with zonal commissioners and town planning officials to review the condition of unsafe buildings and cellar constructions.

The Commissioner emphasized that with early monsoon rains predicted by the meteorological department, officials must stay vigilant and ensure safety measures are in place.

He directed that awareness should be created among families residing in dilapidated buildings and steps taken to move them to safer locations. He insisted that no scope should be given for owners to carry out temporary repairs and that complete preventive action must be taken.

He warned that if any untoward incident occurs in an identified unsafe building, the concerned area officer will be held accountable. Officials were told to raise awareness in advance and ensure evacuation of residents from such buildings.

Neighbors were also advised to remain cautious and keep a safe distance. Orders were issued to seal hazardous buildings and take necessary action.

The Commissioner urged homeowners to fully cooperate and avoid attempting temporary repairs, instead relocating to safer areas. He also advised that cellar constructions should not be initiated in such conditions. Emphasizing the importance of public safety during the monsoon, he directed that all necessary precautions be taken to avoid any accidents.

Hyderabad Rain: 428 dilapidated structures

So far, 428 dilapidated structures have been identified across Greater Hyderabad. Of these, 131 can still be repaired, while notices have been issued for the remaining 297. He instructed officials to inspect structural stability, serve notices, counsel residents to vacate, and guide them on repairs, if possible. In cases of extreme danger, awareness campaigns should be conducted to ensure immediate evacuation.

Furthermore, the Commissioner ordered that starting from May 30 until the end of the monsoon season, no new cellar constructions should be permitted within GHMC limits. For existing cellars, instructions were given to enforce construction of retaining walls and barricades as per regulations and ensure that no water accumulates. Notices must be served to property owners in such cases.

He also directed that the survey for identifying all dilapidated buildings and unauthorized cellar excavations within GHMC limits be completed swiftly. Strict action should be taken against those who violate regulations.

The video conference was attended by Zonal Commissioners Anurag Jayanti, Hemant Keshav Patil, Apoorva Chauhan, Ravi Kiran, Venkanna, along with CCP Srinivas from Head Office Town Planning, Additional CCP Gangadhar, Venkanna, and other officials from zonal and circle town planning departments.
