High Court Stays Metro Corridor-6 Work Pending Heritage Impact Review

High Court | Hyderabad, June 13: The Telangana High Court has ordered a temporary halt to the Metro Phase 2 Corridor-6 project, citing the absence of a heritage impact assessment to evaluate potential threats to nearby historical sites.

The court directed that no construction be carried out along the MGBS to Chandrayangutta stretch until the impact on significant heritage structures — including the Charminar, Falaknuma Palace, Darul Shifa, Mughalpura Tombs, and Azakhana-e-Zehra — is properly assessed.

High Court – Interim Stay

The interim stay was granted in response to a petition filed by Mohammed Rahim, president of the Act Public Welfare Foundation (APWF). Rahim argued that under the Telangana Heritage Act and related statutes, an independent expert panel must evaluate the impact on heritage sites before any infrastructure work begins — a step that authorities had allegedly skipped.

The case was heard on Thursday by a bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Pal and Justice Renuka. The court noted that despite nine adjournments since the petition was filed on January 31, the state government had yet to file a counter-affidavit. The bench granted a further three weeks for the government to respond, during which the stay will remain in effect.
