Opposition Erupts Over Bihar Voter List Revision, Parliament Proceedings Disrupted

Delhi/Hyderabad, July 22 (Maxim News): Protests rocked both Houses of Parliament today as opposition parties launched a united attack against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, ordered ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. The uproar led to repeated adjournments in Parliament, while simultaneous demonstrations were held outside.

Prominent leaders including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Peddapalli MP Vamsi Krishna, along with several MPs from the Congress, RJD, CPI-ML, and AIMIM, raised slogans and accused the Election Commission (ECI) of executing the revision under pressure to influence the electoral outcome.

The flashpoint stems from the Election Commission’s June 24 directive, which ordered a house-to-house re-verification of voters in Bihar as part of the SIR under Article 328 of the Constitution. With over 8 crore voters in the state, the opposition claims the move is impractical and potentially discriminatory, especially towards the poor, minorities, and migrant workers.

While the Supreme Court has allowed the revision process to continue, it has also expressed serious concerns about the timing of the exercise. The court noted that although the ECI is empowered under the Constitution, launching such an extensive revision just months ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections raises questions about its intent and feasibility.

Opposition leaders have dubbed the exercise a form of “vote bashing”, warning that it could lead to large-scale voter disenfranchisement. “The government is using the EC to selectively target voters,” alleged one Congress MP during the protest.

The Election Commission has defended its move, stating that the revision aims to ensure accuracy and transparency in the electoral roll and is part of standard electoral processes ahead of major polls.

As the political heat intensifies, the SIR in Bihar is rapidly emerging as a major electoral flashpoint, with opposition parties vowing to resist any attempt to manipulate the voter base.
