Hyderabad: Reforms In Electricity Sector: Planned Another New DISCOM

Hyderabad, July 31 (Maxim News): Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has ordered officials to take steps to establish another new power distribution company (DISCOM) in the state. He suggested that the necessary reforms be implemented to clean up the state power department.

the Chief Minister held a review meeting with top officials of the energy department at his residence in Jubilee Hills.  Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka also participated in it.  The Chief Minister ordered that the existing North and South DISCOMs will carry out commercial activities, and the new DISCOM should only handle power schemes provided on government subsidy.  he suggested that along with agriculture, all free power supply schemes for homes, schools and colleges should be brought under the purview of the new DISCOM.  He said that the entire state should have a single unit. He said that if the performance of the old DISCOMs improves the rating at the national level will increase.  

The Chief Minister made it clear that reforms are necessary to improve the financial condition of the two existing DISCOMs. He said tht along with their reorganization, the debt burden should be reduced.  He said that the DISCOMs had been struggling with loans taken at 10 percent interest in the past, and he ordered that steps be taken to repay the old ones by taking new loans at low interest rates.  The CM suggested that solar power be provided to the State Secretariat and arrangements should be made for this immediately.  Solar rooftop sheds should be installed for parking vehicles in the Secretariat and solar fencing should be installed around them.

The CM ordered that the Indira Saura Giri jal Vikasam scheme be implemented on a war footing in all tribal, tribal groups and agency areas of the state. He said that the scheme should be applied to 2.10 lakh tribal farmers in three years and solar power pump sets should be installed for 6 lakh acres.  (Maxim News)
