Hyderabad, Aug 18 (Maxim News): The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HYDRA) has focused on controlling flood water near Maitrivanam close to the Ameerpet Metro Station, following directions from Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for a long-term solution. Alongside setting up a trunk line for permanent mitigation, HYDRA is also examining temporary measures to reduce flooding in the area.
On Monday, HYDRA Commissioner AV Ranganath inspected the flood channels around Maitrivanam and later visited the Krishnakant Park lake and associated flood channels. He surveyed the flood channels running from Jubilee Hills Road No.10, Venkatagiri, Rahmatnagar, and Yousufguda towards Krishnakant Park
The Commissioner concluded that diverting heavy floodwater into the Krishnakant Park lake could significantly reduce flooding intensity downstream. The lake currently covers 7 acres, with potential expansion up to 12 acres, allowing it to hold approximately 120 million liters of water temporarily. After the rain subsides, the water can be released downstream, easing flood pressure near the Ameerpet Metro Station.
Currently, floodwater bypasses the park lake and flows directly through Madhuranagar to Ameerpet, causing accumulation under the metro station. The park lake connects to a 1,100-meter box drain leading to the metro area. HYDRA officials informed the Commissioner that the flat terrain near Ameerpet and debris like plastic and waste obstruct the smooth flow of water, exacerbating flooding.

To identify blockages in the pipelines along Amirpet-Sanjeev Reddy Nagar main road, Commissioner Ranganath suggested a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey. This will locate any obstructions trapped inside the pipelines. If clearing is not possible, the installation of box drains can be considered. Until a long-term solution is implemented, authorities must ensure uninterrupted flow of floodwater under the metro station.
Officials also highlighted that flood channels crossing roads from Sarathi Studio to Madhuranagar face issues that need immediate temporary and permanent measures. The Commissioner directed HYDRA officials to focus on both short-term relief and long-term flood mitigation planning. (Maxim News)
