Hyderabad Gym Drug Raids Uncover Illegal Steroid Sales

  • TGDCA raids reveal illegal sale of steroids and cardiac stimulants
  • Officials warn of severe health risks from anabolic steroid abuse

The Drugs Control Administration Telangana (TGDCA) recently conducted surprise inspections in 20 gyms across Hyderabad and found widespread illegal sale of anabolic-androgenic steroids and cardiac stimulants. Gyms in areas like Secunderabad, Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, Malakpet, Punjagutta, Narsingi, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Kothapet, Kukatpally, and Suraram were targeted in coordination with local police authorities.

TGDCA Director Shahnawaz Qasim explained that anabolic steroids are often misused by bodybuilders to enhance muscle growth but carry serious health risks. These include cardiovascular problems, liver damage, mood swings, and hormonal imbalances. Long-term abuse can lead to infertility, kidney failure, and psychiatric disorders.

In addition to steroids, gyms were found selling Mephentermine Sulphate injections—a cardiac stimulant used medically to treat low blood pressure during surgeries. However, this drug is being misused by gym-goers to improve endurance in bodybuilding and competitive sports. Qasim emphasized that Mephentermine Sulphate dosage and duration must only be decided by doctors, as misuse can cause serious harm or even death.

The DCA has warned gyms illegally stockpiling or selling these prescription drugs that they will face strict legal action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. The department urged the public to report such violations via the toll-free number 1800-599-6969, available from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on working days. The crackdown highlights growing concerns over drug abuse in fitness centers and the urgent need for regulatory oversight to protect public health.
