Hyderabad To Get New Stray Dog Care Centres At Katedan

Hyderabad, Oct. 22: GHMC plans new centres at Katedan and Shamshabad, while CMC aims to reopen the non-functional Nizampet facility within six months to strengthen stray dog sterilisation and vaccination.

Hyderabad, October 22, 2026: Hyderabad is set to expand its animal care infrastructure, with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) planning two new centres and the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) preparing to revive a defunct facility in Nizampet. The initiatives aim to strengthen stray dog sterilisation and vaccination services across the city and surrounding areas.

The expansion is expected to increase the capacity of civic veterinary facilities and support efforts to manage the stray dog population through sterilisation and vaccination programmes.

Hyderabad Plans New Animal Care Centres at Katedan and Shamshabad

The GHMC has proposed new animal care centres at Katedan and Shamshabad. Construction of the Katedan facility is already underway, and the centre is expected to conduct around 70–80 sterilisation surgeries once it becomes operational, according to a GHMC official.

The proposed facilities are intended to supplement the existing animal care network and improve access to veterinary services for stray dogs in different parts of Hyderabad.

At present, five animal care centres serve the city. They are located at Fathullaguda, Begum Bazar (Chudibazar), Amberpet (Patelnagar), Kukatpally (KPHB Colony) and Jeedimetla (Mahadevpur).

These centres handle sterilisation procedures and vaccination for stray dogs, which are important components of urban animal population management and public health efforts.

CMC to Reopen Nizampet Animal Care Centre Within Six Months

The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation is planning to bring its non-functional animal care centre in Nizampet back into service within six months.

A CMC veterinary wing official said the civic body was also expanding the capacity of the Mahadevpur Animal Care Centre.

“We are doubling the existing capacity of the Mahadevpur Animal Care Centre from 210 kennels, while the defunct centre in Nizampet would be revived within six months,” the official said.

The proposed capacity expansion and reopening of the Nizampet facility are expected to improve the availability of space for handling stray dogs and supporting sterilisation and vaccination operations.

Hyderabad | How the Expansion Could Help Stray Dog Management

Stray dog sterilisation and vaccination programmes are key components of urban animal management. Additional facilities can help civic bodies accommodate more animals and organise veterinary procedures across a wider area.

The proposed GHMC centres and the planned revival of the Nizampet facility could strengthen Hyderabad’s animal care network. However, the overall impact will depend on when the facilities become operational, their staffing and veterinary resources, and the number of procedures they can undertake.

The civic bodies’ plans represent a further step towards expanding the infrastructure available for stray dog care and population management across Hyderabad and the Cyberabad region.
