Kashmir Democracy Alien To Pakistan: India Tells UN

  • P. Harish criticizes Pakistan’s military rule and human rights violations in Kashmir
  • India highlights Pakistan’s failure to comply with Security Council resolution

India has sharply criticized Pakistan at the United Nations, accusing the country of lacking democratic values and urging Islamabad to end its repression in the areas it illegally occupies in Kashmir. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, stated on Friday that democracy and constitutional governance are alien to Pakistan, which operates under military influence. He emphasised that the people of Jammu and Kashmir exercise their fundamental rights according to India’s democratic traditions and constitutional framework.

Harish condemned Pakistan for ongoing human rights abuses in the occupied Kashmir territories, where he said the population is actively revolting against military occupation and brutality. He called on Pakistan to stop its repression and illegal exploitation of resources. The remarks came as the UN Security Council met to mark the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, themed “Looking into the Future.” Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, made misleading references to a 1948 resolution calling for a plebiscite in Kashmir.

India rebutted these claims, noting that United Nations Security Council Resolution 47 of April 1948 primarily demanded Pakistan’s withdrawal of all armed forces and civilians from occupied areas. Harish highlighted how Pakistan has failed to comply and criticized Islamabad for distorting the resolution. Kashmiris living in areas under Indian administration have integrated into India’s democratic framework, contrasting sharply with the unrest under Pakistan’s control where at least 12 people were killed last month in crackdowns.

In New Delhi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar linked Pakistan’s behaviour to its support for terrorism internationally. Harish echoed this by condemning the UN’s failure to hold Pakistan accountable despite its protection of terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Toiba and The Resistance Front, the latter responsible for the April Pahalgam attack killing 26 civilians. He questioned the credibility of multilateralism when a Security Council member shields terrorists and evades sanctions.

India’s statement stresses the urgency for Pakistan to cease repression and terrorism sponsorship, and for the international community to uphold justice and democratic values in Kashmir and beyond.
