Senior Congress leader Mohammed Ali Shabbir, reiterated that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s government is firmly committed to increasing the Muslim quota from 4 per cent to 10 per cent. He stated that the move would follow the completion of the process to secure 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in the state.

Speaking to residents after Friday prayers in Erragadda during the Jubilee Hills by-election campaign, Shabbir Ali said the Congress government was focused on empowerment through equitable representation. He explained that the proposed expansion of the Muslim quota would rely on caste survey data, which revealed that over 10.08 per cent of Telangana’s Muslim population fell under the BC-E category and continued to suffer economic and educational disadvantages.

“When the previous Congress government introduced the 4 per cent reservation for Muslims in 2004–05, it transformed the lives of more than 20 lakh poor families. Today, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy wants to take that legacy forward by ensuring that every disadvantaged Muslim family gets fair access to education, employment, and state opportunities,” Shabbir Ali said.

He dismissed criticism that the quota move amounted to appeasement, adding that the Congress policy was rooted in justice. “The 42 per cent BC quota and the proposed 10 per cent Muslim quota are not about appeasement—they are about rightful representation. The Congress believes empowerment should reach those who were historically denied their share,” he stressed.

Later, accompanied by Government Whip A. Srinivas and other party leaders, Shabbir Ali led a door-to-door campaign across Erragadda divisions, appealing for votes for Congress candidate Naveen Yadav. The campaign saw an enthusiastic response, particularly from minority communities. Residents reportedly appreciated the state’s welfare efforts over the past 20 months.

Shabbir Ali also contrasted the Congress record with that of the former BRS government, claiming it “promised 12 per cent Muslim reservation but reduced it to a symbolic 3 per cent in practice.” He said the previous administration ignored minority welfare institutions and slashed funding for Telangana Minorities Residential Schools.

Concluding his address, Shabbir Ali said, “This fight is not just about one election—it is about ensuring justice for the poor and dignity for the under-represented. With the support of the people, the Congress government will make the 10 per cent Muslim quota a reality.”
