US President Donald Trump announced that the United States will boycott this year’s Group of 20 (G20) Summit in South Africa, accusing the host country of committing human rights abuses against its minority white farming community. The summit, scheduled to be held in Johannesburg on November 22 and 23, will proceed without the participation of any American government officials.
“It is a total disgrace that the G20 will be held in South Africa,” Trump wrote on his social media platform. He claimed that the South African government has permitted “abuses” against Afrikaners, including violence, killings, and illegal land seizures. “Afrikaners are being killed and slaughtered, and their land and farms are being illegally confiscated. No U.S. Government Official will attend as long as these Human Rights abuses continue. I look forward to hosting the 2026 G20 in Miami, Florida!” he added.
The boycott marks one of the most significant diplomatic withdrawals by the US from a global summit in recent years. It highlights the Trump administration’s tougher posture towards South Africa, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the G20. The South African government has rejected Trump’s allegations, asserting that they are “completely false.” President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously told Trump that reports of widespread persecution of white farmers were inaccurate and politically motivated.
Trump’s latest comments follow his earlier statement at an economic event in Miami, where he said South Africa “should be thrown out of the G20.” He remarked, “South Africa shouldn’t even be in the Gs anymore, because what’s happened there is bad. I’m not going to represent our country there. It shouldn’t be there.”
Earlier this year, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio boycotted a G20 foreign ministers’ meeting, criticizing the forum’s focus on diversity, inclusion, and climate change. Despite Washington’s absence, the upcoming summit in Johannesburg will proceed as planned, with participating nations expected to discuss global economic recovery, energy transition, and development cooperation.
