In his statement, Bhatia emphasized that the summit was an opportunity to evaluate global progress in tackling climate change. He noted that India’s low-carbon growth path under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently delivered measurable results. Between 2005 and 2020, India reduced the emission intensity of its GDP by 36 percent, surpassing its original target. The country’s non-fossil fuel power now accounts for over 50 percent of its total installed capacity, enabling it to achieve its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) five years ahead of schedule.

Bhatia also highlighted India’s significant progress in expanding its green cover, adding that from 2005 to 2021, the country created an additional carbon sink equivalent to 2.29 billion tonnes of CO2. He noted India’s position as the world’s third-largest producer of renewable energy, with nearly 200 GW of installed capacity. The statement further underscored India’s leadership in global green initiatives, such as the International Solar Alliance, which now brings together over 120 countries to promote affordable clean energy and South-South cooperation.

During the discussion, India called for stronger global cooperation, stressing that developed nations must accelerate emission reductions and deliver on their commitments to provide adequate, predictable, and concessional climate finance. “Equitable, predictable, and concessional climate finance remain the cornerstone to achieve global climate goals,” the statement noted. Bhatia reiterated that affordable finance, technological access, and capacity-building remain essential to help developing nations meet ambitious climate targets.

India reaffirmed its faith in multilateralism and the Paris Agreement framework, urging all countries to ensure that the next decade focuses not only on commitments but also on implementation and resilience. The ambassador concluded by thanking Brazil for hosting CoP30 on the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and for continuing the legacy of the Rio Summit that established the foundation of the global climate regime.
