Hyderabad, Nov 18 (Maxim News): Hyderabad City Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar has assured strict action against online threats and abuse against women journalists. Several women journalists, including independent journalist Tulsi Chandu, filed a complaint with the commissioner on Tuesday. They provided details of the continuous trolling, harassment, threats and indecent attacks being faced against them.
A delegation of journalists played several videos showing the nature of trolling to the commissioner. They said that several social media handles are constantly trying to humiliate and intimidate women journalists by making hateful comments, vulgar posts and attacks.
Sajjanar asked his office to provide the available links, screenshots and videos. “We will take action. You will see soon. I will speak again after the action,” he is understood to have told journalists.
In their written complaint, the women journalists alleged that there is a “systematic trend of online harassment” against them. They said that some handles are deliberately sharing vulgar comments, life -threatening threats, derogatory posts and videos. They also included in the complaint that some have openly stated that they know their residential addresses.
They said that this trolling seems to be aimed at insulting fear and hindering their professional work. They said that these handles are also widely posting content that is hateful and inciting religious tension. They asked that the relevant handles and individuals be investigated and action be taken under the IPC and IT Act, and if necessary, online and physical protection be provided.
