India Is A Hindu Country: Mohan Bhagwat Remarks

  • India Hindu country statement made by RSS chief in Kolkata
  • India Hindu country debate raised over Constitution and identity

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat said that India is already a Hindu country and does not need constitutional approval to be recognised as one. He made these remarks while addressing an event in Kolkata. His comments have drawn attention because they directly link national identity with culture and belief, while also rejecting the need for legal or parliamentary validation.

Mohan Bhagwat stated that the reality of India being a Hindu country does not depend on any constitutional process. To explain his view, he used a natural comparison. He said, “The sun rises in the east.. Does this require special approval from the Constitution? It is also true that India is a Hindu country.” Through this statement, he argued that some truths exist beyond written law and formal sanction.

He further explained the position of the RSS, which follows the ideology of Hindutva. According to him, the organisation does not focus on whether Parliament should amend the law to declare India a Hindu country. He said, “The RSS, which believes in the ideology of Hindutva, does not care about whether the Parliament should amend the law to make India a Hindu country..? Or not..? Because we are Hindus. Our country is a Hindu country.” This statement underlined that, in his view, identity comes from lived culture rather than legal language.

Mohan Bhagwat also addressed the question of including the term in the Constitution. He said, “We have no objection whether that word is included in the preamble of the Constitution or not.” He added that India would remain a Hindu country as long as people consider India their motherland, respect Indian culture, and honour the heritage of their ancestors. He said, “As long as there is a person who considers India as his motherland, respects Indian culture and respects the heritage of his ancestors here, India will remain a Hindu country.”

He concluded by asserting what he called a historical truth. “Because Hindustan is a Hindu country by birth. This is the truth,” he commented. His remarks, delivered at a public event in Kolkata, reflect the ideological position of the RSS on nationhood, culture, and identity, while clearly stating that constitutional endorsement is not necessary for that belief.
