- Ready for wars amid China Pakistan threats
- Ready for wars as CDS cites terrorism and border disputes
India should remain ready for wars in view of rising global tensions and regional security challenges, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan said. He warned that India faces serious threats from nuclear powered neighbours China and Pakistan. He also underlined that terrorism and border disputes continue to pose major risks. Therefore, he stressed the need for preparedness for both short and long conflicts.
General Anil Chauhan made these remarks while addressing a programme organised at IIT Bombay. His comments came amid growing concerns over escalating tensions in various countries. Meanwhile, he focused on India’s strategic environment and the need to remain alert to multiple forms of conflict. He made it clear that modern warfare demands readiness across domains and timeframes.
Highlighting the nature of threats, the CDS said, “Both our adversaries have nuclear capabilities. We must be ready to face any challenges from those countries.” He pointed out that past operations offer lessons for future readiness. Therefore, he said India must prepare for both short and long term conflicts to counter terrorism. He also stressed the importance of readiness for land based conflicts arising from ongoing border disputes.
General Chauhan further explained how technology is reshaping warfare. He said, “Like the operations undertaken in the past, we must be ready for short and long-term conflicts to counter terrorism. We must be ready to fight in land conflicts due to the ongoing border disputes.” He then highlighted emerging tools that are changing combat methods. “Artificial intelligence, quantum computing, hypersonics, edge computing and robotics are changing the way of fighting,” he said.
Meanwhile, his remarks reflected broader concerns within the defence establishment about evolving security challenges. The CDS linked traditional threats with rapid technological change. He therefore stressed the need for India’s armed forces to adapt continuously. The focus, he indicated, should remain on preparedness, capability building, and strategic awareness.
General Chauhan’s comments have drawn attention as India navigates a complex security landscape. With nuclear armed neighbours, persistent terrorism, and unresolved border issues, his message underlined the importance of long term defence readiness. The address at IIT Bombay served as a reminder that future conflicts may demand both endurance and innovation from India’s defence forces.
