Telangana Assembly Session | Hyderabad, Sept. 7: Telangana Assembly sessions begin on September 7, with the proposed reduction of the legislative election age drawing fresh attention.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy had earlier proposed lowering the minimum age for contesting Assembly and Parliament elections to 21 years. He had said the government would pass a resolution and send it to the Centre.
Revanth had questioned the need for a higher age limit for legislative elections. He pointed out that young people can clear competitive exams and enter services such as the IAS and IPS at around 21.
The Chief Minister had argued that such young people should also get an opportunity to contest elections. However, he has not spoken publicly about the proposal again after making the initial announcement.
The issue has therefore gained renewed interest as the Assembly session begins. Political circles are watching whether the government will introduce a resolution on the matter.
According to ruling party leaders, the Congress high command has not cleared the proposal. They say a change in the election age would require a wider national position from the party.
They also argue that if Telangana supports the proposal, Congress would need to consider a similar position in other states. This could create pressure on the party’s national leadership.
Assembly agenda includes 22A, fee reimbursement and youth issues
The Assembly will begin proceedings at 10 am after the inauguration of the newly established Central Hall at 9 am. Revanth Reddy, Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar and Council Chairman Gutha Sukhender Reddy will attend the inauguration.
The two Houses will begin with Question Hour. The government will also place several reports before the legislature.
These include the Telangana Samagra Shiksha report for 2024 to 25. The government will also present the PM Shri audit report for 2024 to 25.
The government will place reports related to the Metro Rail before the House. The reports cover the period from 2013 to 14 through 2017 to 18.
The Business Advisory Committee will meet after Question Hour. It will decide the number of sitting days and finalise the legislative agenda.
The BRS has demanded a month long session. Former minister T Harish Rao announced the demand after the BRS Legislature Party meeting.
Telangana Assembly Session
The BJP has sought at least 15 sitting days for both Houses. Therefore, the final duration of the session remains a key point of interest.
Ruling party leaders expect the Assembly to function for around five days. Several important issues could dominate the proceedings.
The 22A land issue will likely receive major attention. Fee reimbursement, the proposed merger of polytechnic colleges with the Skill University and the proposed merger of Intermediate and Class 10 education systems may also come up.
The government has prepared to debate 22A. Revanth Reddy has already discussed the issue with Congress legislators.
Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy has also challenged the opposition to discuss the matter in the Assembly. Revenue officials are preparing information on 22A, Dharani and Bhu Bharati.
BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao’s attendance
Meanwhile, uncertainty continues over BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao’s attendance. BRS leaders have indicated that he may not attend the session.
The ruling party could use his absence to question the opposition’s participation in the legislature. BRS leaders, however, have alleged that Revanth Reddy has targeted KCR with personal remarks.
The session will therefore carry political importance beyond its listed agenda. The debate over the legislative election age could also become a major talking point if the government brings the proposal forward.
