Another election in Telangana: Is this the strategy of Revanth Sarkar?

Hyderabad, Dec 28 (Maxim News): The Telangana government is preparing for another election in Telangana, with a focus on pending urban local body polls. After securing what it considers respectable results in the recent Panchayat elections, the ruling party is now turning its attention to municipalities and municipal corporations across the state. The government aims to complete these elections by the second week of February, before the start of the school examination season.

Sources said that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has already instructed the State Election Commission to be fully prepared for the elections by the third week of January. Following these directions, commission officials have begun arrangements related to election preparedness. The move indicates that the government wants to move quickly and avoid delays linked to academic schedules.

The terms of 120 municipalities and nine corporations across Telangana expired in January last year, and special officers are currently in charge of these bodies. Meanwhile, the terms of GHMC, Khammam, and Warangal municipal corporations are set to expire in February next year. At the same time, the government has taken several administrative decisions related to urban governance. It recently issued orders to merge 27 municipalities and corporations located within the ORR limits with GHMC. It has also decided to upgrade some city panchayats into municipalities and some municipalities into corporations.

Election planning amid administrative changes

With these changes, Telangana now has eight corporations and 125 municipalities, including GHMC. The government is considering holding elections simultaneously for all urban local bodies, including GHMC, whose term ends in February. However, with student examinations scheduled in March and the exam season likely to begin from February, the government wants to complete most elections before that period.

In this context, elections for Khammam and Warangal corporations, along with two municipalities in Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda districts, have deadlines extending until April. Officials said the current plan is to conduct elections in February for the remaining municipalities, excluding these bodies. Meanwhile, the State Election Commission has begun preparing voter lists in municipalities and aims to complete this process by the second week of January to stay ready.

Development funds released ahead of polls

Keeping these elections in mind, the government has also accelerated development works in urban local bodies. It has released Rs. 2,780 crore for this purpose, excluding GHMC. With this funding, 2,432 development works will be taken up. Additionally, Rs. 15 crore has been sanctioned for newly formed municipalities, Rs. 20 crore for municipalities that absorbed gram panchayats in suburban areas, and Rs. 30 crore for newly formed corporations.

Officials are also working to secure the state’s share of funds under central schemes. With large funds released at once, development activities have gained momentum. The government hopes to complete these works by the end of January and believes this will help achieve the desired results when elections are held later.
