Nizamabad Municipal Elections Heat Up After Reservation Draw
Hyderabad: Municipal election activity has intensified in the undivided Nizamabad district after authorities finalised reservations for civic bodies through a draw of lots. The process covered the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation and the municipalities of Armur, Bodhan, Kamareddy, Banswada, Yellareddy and Bichkunda. With this, uncertainty over reserved posts has ended, and political parties have shifted focus to candidate selection.
District collectors conducted the draw on Saturday in the presence of recognised political party representatives. Nizamabad Collector Ila Tripathi and Kamareddy Collector Ashish Sangwan oversaw the process. As a result, reservations for chairperson posts and wards now stand confirmed, clearing the way for the next phase of the Nizamabad municipal elections.
Reservations Clear Way for Candidate Selection
The completion of the reservation exercise marks a key stage in the municipal polls. Following the announcement, party leaders and public representatives began internal meetings to plan strategies. In Bhimgal town, former minister and Balkonda MLA Vemula Prashanth Reddy met party leaders and workers. He guided them on preparations and campaign direction for the upcoming civic elections.
The undivided district has one municipal corporation and seven municipalities. Of these, five chairperson posts are reserved for women. Two posts fall under the general category, while one goes to the BC general category. Authorities reserved the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation, Armur and Bhimgal chairperson posts for general women. Kamareddy and Banswada posts went to BC women. Bodhan remained in the general category, while Bichkunda went to BC general.
With most posts reserved for women, political observers say women candidates will play a decisive role this time. In one more post, both men and women can contest, further increasing women’s chances in leadership roles.
Male Aspirants Upset
However, the reservations upset several male aspirants. Many leaders earlier hoped to enter the fray directly this time. Instead, the women friendly reservations forced them to rethink plans. Party workers said several aspirants now appear uncertain about their next steps.
Meanwhile, the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation mayoral race is expected to be highly competitive. The contest between the ruling party and the BJP is likely to be intense. Parties are moving cautiously while shortlisting strong candidates. Names such as former chairpersons Akula Sujatha and Neetu Kiran, along with Sravanthi Reddy and Kaparthi Sujatha, are being discussed.
At the same time, the Congress faces concerns over rebel candidates. The BJP remains strong in Nizamabad, backed by MP Arvind Dharmapuri and urban MLA Dhanpal Suryanarayana Gupta. The party aims to regain the civic body it narrowly lost earlier.
