Speaker Begins Hearing on Daanam Nagender Disqualification Petitions
Hyderabad, Jan. 30 (Maxim News): The Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar on Friday formally began hearings on disqualification petitions filed against Khairatabad MLA Daanam Nagender, marking a crucial stage in the politically sensitive defection cases in the State.
The proceedings were held at the Speaker’s Chamber in the Assembly. BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy, who filed one of the petitions, appeared along with his legal counsel and presented arguments before the Speaker. Daanam Nagender also attended the hearing with his lawyers.
Speaker examines petitions amid Supreme Court deadline
Ahead of the hearing, Daanam Nagender submitted an affidavit to the Speaker.
In the affidavit, he stated that he had not resigned from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and continues to be a member of the party.
He clarified that his participation in a Congress meeting in March 2024 was in a personal capacity and did not amount to a formal change of party affiliation.
The Speaker is also scheduled to hear a separate disqualification petition filed by BJP Legislature Party leader Aleti Maheshwar Reddy in the same matter later in the day.
The hearings have gained urgency as the deadline set by the Supreme Court for deciding MLA disqualification cases expires on January 31.
In view of the timeline, the Speaker has accelerated proceedings in pending petitions related to alleged defections.
In the past, the Speaker had dismissed several disqualification petitions against MLAs facing defection allegations.
The outcome of the current hearing involving Daanam Nagender is therefore being closely watched and has emerged as a major talking point in Telangana politics.
