Hyderabad: Iran prepares for war as the United States continues to threaten military action, while diplomatic efforts in the region seek to prevent a new conflict. Iranian authorities have signalled readiness to defend the country as a US military “armada” moves closer to Iranian waters. The situation has triggered strong political, military, and public reactions across Iran.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is scheduled to hold high level talks in Turkey today. The visit comes amid growing diplomatic activity aimed at easing tensions. According to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, Tehran wants to “constantly strengthen ties with neighbours based on shared interests”. However, the diplomatic push has not slowed US military movements in the region.

Meanwhile, a US “armada” continues to position itself near Iran’s waters. President Donald Trump referred to the deployment using that term on Wednesday. The fleet is led by the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier. At the same time, Iranian leaders continue to send messages of defiance. They have made it clear that defence, not negotiation, remains the top priority.

“Tehran’s priority is currently not to negotiate with the US, but to have 200 percent readiness to defend our country,” Kazem Gharibabadi, a senior member of the Iranian negotiating team, was quoted as saying by state media on Wednesday. He said messages were exchanged with the US through intermediaries. However, he added that Iran would stay fully prepared even if talks became possible. He also noted that Iran was previously attacked by Israel and then the US last June, just as negotiations were about to begin.

Iran has also highlighted its military strength in recent days. This follows multiple military exercises held since June’s 12 day war. During that conflict, several senior military officials were killed and nuclear sites were attacked. On Thursday, the Iranian army announced that 1,000 new “strategic” drones had joined its forces. According to the army, these include suicide drones, combat drones, reconnaissance units, and cyberwarfare capable aircraft.

“Proportionate to the threats facing us, the agenda of the army includes maintaining and improving strategic advantages for fast combat and a decisive response to any aggression,” army commander Amir Hamati said in a short statement.

Public reaction inside Iran remains mixed. Some citizens expressed strong support for the government’s stance. “America can’t do a damn thing,” a young woman told Al Jazeera in Tehran. Others voiced fear. “I think another war would be totally terrible for both countries,” a student said. Authorities have also increased civilian preparedness. President Masoud Pezeshkian has delegated powers to border province governors to import essential goods in case of war. Attention has also turned to the need for public shelters. (Maxim News)
