Is The Stage Set For Changing The Name Of The State Of Kerala ?
Delhi/internet Desk/Hyderabad, Feb 24 (Maxim News): It seems that the stage is set for the name change of the state of Kerala. Reports have emerged in the national media that the Union Cabinet is likely to approve the bill to call the state ‘Keralam’ today. This news has assumed great significance in the context of the upcoming assembly elections in Kerala.
The demand to call their state Keralam has been there for a long time among the Malayali people. The Assembly approved the resolution introduced by the state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in this regard in 2023. However, after some changes as per the instructions of the Central Government, the Kerala Assembly once again passed the resolution. It is currently pending with the Center.
CM Vijayan said that his state will be called Keralam in Malayalam language when the state assembly passed a resolution last year. He recalled that the demand for a united Kerala for all Malayalam people existed during the freedom struggle. But due to the influence of the English language, the name of the state was included in the First Schedule of the Constitution as Kerala. He urged the Centre to amend the Third Amendment of the Constitution to include the name of Kerala in the First Schedule and to change the name of the state to this extent in the 8th Schedule languages.
