Civic Body Elections Uncertainty In Telangana

Hyderabad: Uncertainty continues over civic body elections in three municipalities of Telangana, even as the process has concluded in the rest of the State’s urban local bodies. The pending elections involve the posts of chairpersons and deputy chairpersons in Kanthanapally, Khanapur and Ibrahimpatnam.

High Court deadline for Ibrahimpatnam civic body elections

The High Court has set a three week deadline to complete the civic body elections in Ibrahimpatnam. However, there is still no clarity on when the process will conclude in Kanthanapally and Khanapur. Of the 123 urban local bodies where elections were held, 120 have already elected their chairpersons and deputy chairpersons. Therefore, only three municipalities remain.

District collectors have submitted detailed reports to the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department. These reports outline the reasons for the postponement. Meanwhile, the MAUD is expected to send its recommendations to the State Election Commission. The SEC will then fix fresh dates for the civic body elections. However, officials confirmed that the SEC has not yet received formal communication from the Municipal authorities.

Political wrangling stalls chairperson polls

In Kanthanapally of Mancherial district, the BRS emerged as the single largest party. It won 10 of 22 wards, while its ally CPI secured four seats. The Congress won seven wards. However, clashes between BRS and Congress councillors led to the postponement of the election.

In Ibrahimpatnam of Rangareddy district, the BRS secured a clear majority with 13 of 24 wards. Still, authorities deferred the election after disturbances allegedly triggered by the Congress. Meanwhile, Khanapur in Nirmal district saw a hung verdict. In the 12 member body, BRS and BJP won four wards each, Congress secured three, and an independent won one seat.

The BRS accused the Congress government of deliberately stalling the civic body elections to engineer defections and alter outcomes. However, the ruling party has not publicly responded.

With the High Court setting a deadline for Ibrahimpatnam, the State government is expected to act swiftly. The administration may move to complete the civic body elections soon to avoid further legal complications.
