Hyderabad: Submarine Attack on Iranian Ship has left 101 people missing off the Sri Lankan coast. The incident marks a serious turn as the US-Iran war reached Sri Lanka. A submarine attacked an Iranian ship sailing in Sri Lankan waters. The ship was badly damaged. It also caught fire after the strike.

After the attack, the Iranian ship sent emergency signals to the Sri Lankan Navy. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Navy received the distress signals and immediately stepped in. They approached the damaged vessel and rescued 78 people on board. However, 101 people on the ship were already missing. Sri Lankan Navy officials are now searching for them.

According to Sri Lankan defense officials, 32 of the 78 rescued persons were injured. They have been admitted to the Navy Hospital. The Sri Lankan Defense Ministry stated that there were 180 people on board the ship. Out of them, 101 are currently missing.

The Iranian navy frigate Iris Deva was sailing off the southern coast of Sri Lanka when the submarine attacked it. After the strike, the vessel caught fire and suffered heavy damage. However, the Sri Lankan Navy responded quickly to the emergency call. They rescued the crew members and shifted the injured for treatment.

It is not yet known which country the submarine belonged to. Authorities have also not confirmed who carried out the attack. Therefore, the identity of the attackers remains unclear.

Recently, international naval exercises were held in Visakhapatnam in the last week of February 2026. The Iranian ship had come to Vizag from Iran to participate in these exercises. After the program ended, the ship left for Iran. However, it was attacked while passing through Sri Lankan waters off the coast of Vizag.

The Sri Lankan Navy continues search operations for the missing crew. Meanwhile, the situation adds to tensions amid the ongoing war against Iran.
