According to officials, any person who intends to convert from one religion to another must obtain permission from the relevant authorities at least 60 days in advance. This condition forms a key part of the proposed law. The rule is intended to ensure official oversight of the conversion process.

Mandatory approval and registration rules under proposed law

The draft law also requires that conversions be formally registered within 25 days after the change of religion takes place. Officials stated that if the conversion is not registered within this period, the conversion will be considered invalid. Therefore, the registration requirement becomes a mandatory step under the proposed legal framework.

Meanwhile, authorities explained that the government introduced the draft to protect citizens from forced conversions. The measure also targets conversions that may occur through fraudulent promises or inducements. Officials said the law aims to prevent conversions carried out with misleading assurances or expectations.

Bill titled Dharma Swatantrya Adhiniyam 2026

The government has prepared the draft bill under the title Dharma Swatantrya Adhiniyam 2026. Officials indicated that the bill is expected to become law soon once the required legislative process is completed.

The draft also outlines the role of law enforcement agencies. If relatives of an individual file a complaint alleging illegal religious conversion, police will immediately register a First Information Report. Following the complaint, authorities will launch an investigation into the matter.

The proposal was reported from Mumbai and Hyderabad in the update released on March 7. Officials reiterated that the primary goal of the legislation is to safeguard individuals from coercion, deception, or pressure in matters related to religion.

Therefore, the draft law introduces both preventive checks and legal procedures for religious conversions. If enacted, the legislation will establish a formal process involving prior permission, official registration, and investigation of complaints related to illegal conversions.
