India Oil Reserves: Govt Says Supply Sufficient for Two Months

  • India Oil Reserves include 250 million barrels of crude and fuel
  • Strait of Hormuz tensions raise concerns over India energy security

Hyderabad: The Centre has clarified that India has adequate oil reserves despite concerns about supply disruptions due to tensions in West Asia and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Officials said the country currently holds about 250 million barrels of fuel, which equals roughly 4 thousand crore liters of crude oil and refined petroleum products.

Reports earlier suggested that the country’s oil reserves were full but might last only about 25 days. However, the government responded and stated that the available oil products within the supply system are sufficient to meet the country’s needs for about two months.

India Oil Reserves stored in strategic locations

According to the Centre, India Oil Reserves are stored in several strategic locations across the country. These include facilities in Visakhapatnam, Mangalore and Padur. In addition, reserves are also held in pipelines, storage tanks and sea vessels that are part of the national fuel supply system.

Officials explained that these reserves ensure continued supply even during disruptions. Meanwhile, the government highlighted that the oil products currently circulating in the supply network can support national demand for about two months.

The clarification came amid growing concerns about the impact of tensions in West Asia and developments around the Strait of Hormuz. The route is a key global energy corridor and plays an important role in oil shipments.

Import diversification supports India energy security

The Centre also explained that India imports oil from about 40 countries around the world. Of these imports, only about 40 percent come through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the remaining 60 percent reaches India through other routes and suppliers.

Officials said these include Russia, West Africa, the United States and other regions. This diversification, according to the government, helps strengthen India energy security and reduces dependence on a single supply route.

At the same time, the Centre stated that Indian refineries are in talks with suppliers in Russia, the United States and West African countries to secure additional crude oil. These discussions aim to ensure stable fuel availability in the coming months.

Meanwhile, after the United States granted exemption on Russian oil imports, major companies such as HPCL and Reliance are preparing to import oil from Russia again. The Centre therefore concluded that there is no need for concern regarding oil reserves in the country.
