- KTR criticises Speaker verdict rejecting BRS disqualification petitions
- KTR says Speaker decision in defection case insults people’s mandate
Hyderabad: KTR criticised the Speaker verdict in the defection case involving MLAs Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari. The BRS working president strongly criticised Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar for dismissing the disqualification petitions filed by the party. He described the decision as an attack on democracy.
The Speaker had rejected the petitions filed by the BRS against the two MLAs. According to the decision, the petitions were dismissed citing lack of evidence. However, KTR criticised the Speaker verdict and questioned the reasoning behind the dismissal. He said the move undermines democratic values and public trust.
Responding to the development, KT Rama Rao said the decision sends a wrong signal about the functioning of constitutional institutions. He argued that leaders who win elections on one party’s ticket but later support another party should not receive a clean chit. According to him, such actions weaken the spirit of the electoral mandate.
In his statement, Rama Rao said giving relief to leaders who change political allegiance after winning elections goes against the will of the people. He said the voters support candidates based on party affiliation and policies. Therefore, allowing them to shift loyalties later damages the integrity of the democratic process.
“This is not a mere verdict, but a clear example of how the constitutional institutions were being misused in favour of those in power. The verdict will encourage defections,” he cautioned, terming it as a dark day in the history of democracy.
KTR also expressed concern about the wider impact of the decision. He said such verdicts may encourage political defections in the future. Meanwhile, he warned that this could weaken the faith of citizens in democratic institutions and electoral accountability.
He further said that elected representatives must respect the mandate given by voters. According to him, switching political sides for personal or political gain erodes the credibility of the system. Therefore, he argued that strong action is necessary to protect democratic values and maintain public trust.
The criticism comes amid ongoing debate over defections and party loyalty in legislative bodies. The BRS leadership has been raising concerns about the issue and the impact of such decisions on democratic governance. With the Speaker verdict now delivered, the controversy around the defection case involving Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari has drawn fresh political reactions.
