Kolkata/Hyderabad, Mar 16 (Maxim News): The schedule for assembly elections in four states and one union territory has been released on Sunday. The Election Commission of India (ECI) held a press conference in the national capital Delhi on Sunday and released the schedule for the assembly elections in the states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and the union territory of Puducherry.
In this context, the EC took a key decision regarding the West Bengal elections today. It has issued orders removing the state’s Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty from that responsibility. Dushyant Nariya has been appointed in her place. On the other hand, the EC has also removed Home Secretary Jagadish Prasad Meena. It has written a letter to the state government appointing IAS officer Sanghamitra Ghosh in this post.
The EC has directed the West Bengal government not to assign any polling-related duties to Nandini Chakraborty and Jagadish Prasad Meena till the completion of the elections. The EC has said in its letter that these officials should not participate in any election-related duties till the end of the assembly elections. It said that the two have been kept away from duty after reviewing the election preparations. It said that its orders will come into effect immediately.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress MPs today walked out of the Rajya Sabha protesting the removal of West Bengal CS Nandini Chakraborty and Home Secretary Jagadish Prasad Meena by the EC. The assembly elections in Bengal will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29. The counting of votes will be held on May 4. Recently, there have been serious differences between the Trinamool Congress government and the Election Commission on issues like voter list and amendments. (Maxim News)
