India LPG Tanker Clears Strait Of Hormuz Safely

  • India LPG tanker Green Sanvi crosses Strait amid tensions
  • Seventh Indian vessel passes key route during West Asia conflict

Hyderabad, April 4: An India LPG tanker has safely cleared the Strait of Hormuz, marking another successful transit amid rising West Asia tensions. The vessel, Green Sanvi, became the seventh India flagged LPG tanker to cross the critical maritime route during the ongoing conflict.

According to ship tracking data, Green Sanvi moved east of the Strait of Hormuz using a designated corridor through Iran’s territorial waters. The tanker was carrying around 44,000 tonnes of LPG. This amount equals roughly half a day’s LPG consumption in India before the conflict began.

Meanwhile, industry experts indicated that two more India flagged LPG tankers, Green Asha and Jag Vikram, are expected to cross the Strait in the coming days. Therefore, India continues to maintain its energy supply routes despite disruptions in the region.

The latest transit brings the total number of India flagged merchant vessels that have crossed the Strait to seven since the war began. All of them were LPG tankers. With this, there are now 17 India flagged ships present in the Persian Gulf region, east of the Strait.

Diplomatic coordination ensures safe passage

India has been actively engaging with Iran to ensure safe movement of its vessels. Iran had earlier restricted ship movements due to the conflict. However, it clarified that non hostile vessels from countries not aligned with the US or Israel could pass through the Strait in coordination with its authorities.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that the waterway remains open for friendly nations. He stated that vessels from countries such as China, Russia, India, Iraq, and Pakistan have been allowed to transit the chokepoint.

During its journey, Green Sanvi signalled its Indian identity and details of its crew. This has become a standard practice for vessels coordinating safe passage through Iranian waters. It helps avoid confusion and ensures smooth transit in a sensitive region.

Strategic importance of Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. It is one of the most important routes for global energy shipments. Therefore, safe navigation through this waterway remains vital for many countries.

Despite ongoing tensions, the successful passage of Green Sanvi highlights India’s efforts to secure energy supply lines. It also shows the role of diplomacy and coordination in maintaining trade flows during conflict situations.
