Hyderabad, May 3: Allahabad High Court verdict on namaz clarified that religious practice does not include offering prayers at disputed or private premises used as public congregational spaces. The ruling came while dismissing a plea from Sambhal seeking permission to conduct regular namaz.
The Allahabad High Court held that individuals cannot convert private properties into unregulated religious gathering places. Therefore, the court denied police protection for such activities.
Allahabad High Court verdict on namaz draws reactions
Following the judgment, several Muslim leaders welcomed the decision. Maulana Chaudhary Ibrahim Hussain stated that Islam encourages prayers at designated places like mosques. He added that offering namaz at disputed locations may create unnecessary conflicts.
Moreover, he emphasized the importance of maintaining communal harmony. According to him, public spaces must remain accessible for all citizens. Hence, religious practices in such areas may hurt sentiments and lead to disputes.
Similarly, Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi supported the verdict. He noted that Islamic teachings also discourage prayers at controversial or inconvenient places. He pointed out that public areas often face congestion and noise, which makes them unsuitable for worship.
In addition, he highlighted that emergency services like ambulances require clear access. Therefore, religious gatherings in public spaces could disrupt essential services.
Meanwhile, Iqbal Ansari said that laws apply equally to all communities. He reiterated that mosques are the appropriate places for offering namaz.
The Allahabad High Court verdict on namaz underscores the balance between religious freedom and public order. Legal experts believe the ruling reinforces the need to avoid disputes while practicing faith.
