Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari attended the swearing in ceremony along with several senior NDA leaders and chief ministers.
Four ministers also took oath along with Himanta Biswa Sarma. BJP leaders Rameshwar Teli and Ajanta Neog were inducted into the Cabinet. Alliance partners Atul Bora from AGP and Charan Boro from BPF also took oath as ministers.
The BJP led NDA alliance recorded a sweeping victory in the Assam Assembly elections. BJP won 82 seats in the 126 member Assembly, securing its first clear single party majority in the state. Its allies AGP and BPF won 10 seats each, taking the alliance tally to 102 seats.
In comparison, Congress secured 19 seats while its ally Raijor Dal managed two seats. AIUDF and Trinamool Congress won two and one seats respectively.
The newly elected BJP and alliance MLAs unanimously elected Himanta Biswa Sarma as their leader on Sunday. He later met the Governor and formally staked claim to form the government.
This marks the third consecutive NDA government in Assam. BJP first came to power in the state in 2016 by ending 15 years of Congress rule. The party retained power again in 2021 and has now strengthened its hold further with a dominant electoral performance.
Himanta Biswa Sarma first became Assam Chief Minister on May 10, 2021 after succeeding former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
The new government is expected to focus on infrastructure development, welfare schemes, employment generation and implementation of key BJP poll promises during its second term.
