Hyderabad, May 13: N Rangasamy on Wednesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for a record fifth term after the formation of the new government in the Union Territory.
Lieutenant Governor Kailashnathan administered the oath of office and secrecy during the swearing in ceremony.
Speaking after assuming office, Rangasamy said his government would focus on public welfare and development across the Union Territory.
“We will work for the people and take every step needed for Puducherry’s growth,” he said.
The All India NR Congress led NDA secured a comfortable majority in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
The alliance received support from 18 MLAs in the 30 member Assembly.
Rangasamy earlier met the Lieutenant Governor and submitted letters of support from elected legislators to stake claim to form the government.
Following the formal approval, he was invited to form the new administration.
Additional ministers are expected to take oath shortly.
The 76 year old leader has remained one of Puducherry’s most influential political figures for more than two decades.
Rangasamy first became Chief Minister in 2001 while serving in the Indian National Congress.
He continued in office until 2008 before launching the All India NR Congress.
He later returned to power from 2011 to 2016 and again led the AINRC BJP alliance government from 2021 to 2026.
In the latest elections, Rangasamy won from both Thattanchavady and Mangalam constituencies.
Political observers said the result reflected his continued popularity and strong grassroots support in Puducherry.
Officials said the new government will focus on infrastructure development, welfare schemes and administrative continuity.
The swearing in ceremony marked the beginning of another NDA term in Puducherry under Rangasamy’s leadership.
Leaders from alliance parties and senior officials attended the ceremony.
The new administration is expected to announce its cabinet expansion and governance priorities in the coming days.
