POCSO Cases In Telangana Raise Safety Concerns For Girls

Hyderabad, May 18: Rising POCSO cases in Telangana have triggered fresh concerns over the safety of minor girls, with officials warning parents and children to remain cautious about friendships and social interactions.

According to data from the Women Safety Wing, an average of eight POCSO cases are being registered daily across the State. Officials said many accused are known to the victims, including friends, neighbours, relatives and other familiar persons.

The issue gained renewed attention after a POCSO case was registered against Bandi Bhagirath in Hyderabad.

From June 2025 to April 2026, police registered 2,799 POCSO cases in Telangana. Officials said the figures indicate that several minors face sexual abuse or harassment every day.

Most accused known to victims in POCSO cases

Data collected under the Hyderabad Commissionerate showed that 409 POCSO cases were registered during a four month period. Bharosa Kendra officials found that 385 accused, nearly 94 percent, were known to the victims.

Officials said around 65 percent of the accused were friends. Another 11 percent were neighbours, while 8 percent were relatives. The remaining accused included school vehicle drivers, apartment watchmen and shop owners.

Police advised parents to closely monitor children’s behaviour and interactions. Officials also urged parents to educate minors about possible risks associated with friendships and unfamiliar behaviour.

Authorities said children should not be sent alone to isolated places. They also stressed the need for caution when children are left alone at home.

Officials further advised parents to remain alert about the behaviour of neighbours and relatives around minors and to encourage children to report anything suspicious immediately.
