Urdu Academy Chief Named 24 Hours Before Retirement

Hyderabad, June 2: The Telangana Minorities Welfare Department has appointed Shaik Jaffar as Incharge Director of the Telangana Urdu Academy just 24 hours before his retirement, triggering debate within bureaucratic and community circles.

According to a government memo issued on May 29, 2026, the department relieved the existing Director, Mohd. Asadullah, and placed Jaffar in charge with immediate effect. The appointment remains valid only until his superannuation on May 31, 2026.

The unusually brief tenure has raised questions among employees, stakeholders and members of the Urdu community about the rationale behind the decision.

The appointment has drawn comparisons on social media and in administrative circles to the film Nayak, in which a character assumes a top government position for a single day.

Observers note that Jaffar’s appointment came at the end of a long career and provided little time for him to exercise administrative authority or implement any policy decisions.

Several stakeholders have questioned why the government opted for a 24 hour arrangement instead of appointing a regular or longer term incharge. Others argue that a formal farewell and recognition of Jaffar’s service could have achieved the same objective without creating administrative uncertainty.

The decision has also renewed discussions over promotions, appointments and succession planning within the Academy.

However, no official inquiry has established any irregularities, and the government has not announced any investigation into the institution’s functioning.

Meanwhile, the government has not named a permanent successor, leading to speculation about future leadership at the Academy.

Officials have maintained that the appointment was made purely on administrative grounds.

Comparison With Past Bureaucratic Decisions

The controversy has prompted comparisons with earlier tenure related decisions in Telangana’s bureaucracy, particularly the debate surrounding former Chief Secretary Dr. S.K. Joshi.

Administrative observers point out that governments often cite institutional stability when making senior appointments. In past cases, short remaining service periods have been considered a factor while selecting officials for key posts. Against that backdrop, critics argue that appointing an officer with only 24 hours of service left appears inconsistent with the principle of ensuring continuity in leadership.

Supporters of the move, however, contend that governments retain the authority to make administrative postings until an employee’s final day in service.

Neither the Minorities Welfare Department nor the Telangana Urdu Academy has issued a detailed explanation regarding the reasons behind the appointment.

As the debate continues, the central question being raised by stakeholders remains: what administrative purpose was served by appointing an Incharge Director only 24 hours before retirement?

The development has attracted attention across Telangana’s Urdu community and administrative circles, with many awaiting clarity on the Academy’s next leadership appointment.
