Over 200 Year Old Mosque Demolished In Varanasi

Varanasi, June 3: A mosque believed to be around 200 years old was demolished in Varanasi on Tuesday night as part of the redevelopment and expansion works associated with Kashi Railway Station.

Officials said the Azgabi Shaheed Mosque near Rajghat fell within the area identified for the railway station modernization project.

According to officials, the demolition was carried out under heavy security arrangements as authorities proceeded with land clearance for the redevelopment project.

The Kashi Railway Station redevelopment project is estimated to cost around Rs 400 crore. The plan aims to create an integrated transport hub by connecting rail, road, metro, and water transport facilities at a single location.

Authorities stated that the mosque structure was situated within the designated project zone and was removed as part of the approved development works.

The demolition operation was completed within a short period using heavy machinery, including five JCB machines and two Poclain excavators.

The exercise was conducted in the presence of Shiv Hari Meena and other senior police officials. Personnel from the police and paramilitary forces were also deployed to maintain law and order during the operation.

Officials said the redevelopment project is expected to significantly upgrade passenger facilities and improve transport connectivity in the region.
