Hyderabad, June 6: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested former Trinamool Congress MLA Saukat Mollah in connection with the Bhangar bomb blast case in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district.
The arrest was made on Friday night, hours after the former legislator was declared absconding by investigators.
According to NIA officials, Saukat Mollah is the main accused in the case linked to a bomb blast that occurred on March 19 at Dakshina Bamunia in the Bhangar area ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
The explosion claimed one life and left three others seriously injured. Following the incident, the NIA registered a case and launched an investigation.
Officials said Mollah was taken into custody from South 24 Parganas district and will be produced before a court on Saturday. Another individual accompanying him was also detained.
The agency stated that four persons, including the former MLA, have been arrested so far in connection with the case.
On Thursday, NIA teams conducted extensive searches at Mollah’s residence and several locations linked to him across South 24 Parganas district. Raids were carried out in areas including Moukhali, Baruipur and Sonarpur as part of the ongoing investigation.
Investigators had earlier arrested the driver allegedly involved in transporting individuals connected to the bomb manufacturing operation.
The arrest of the former legislator has triggered political discussions in West Bengal. Saukat Mollah represented the All India Trinamool Congress and won the Canning East Assembly constituency in both the 2016 and 2021 elections.
The NIA said further investigation into the Bhangar bomb blast case is underway.
