Hyderabad, June 7: In a major enforcement drive, Hyderabad traffic police arrested 422 individuals for drunk driving during special checks conducted over the weekend on June 5 and 6, officials said.
The crackdown was part of intensified efforts to curb road accidents caused by driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to police data, the arrested offenders included:
- 347 two-wheeler riders
- 42 four-wheeler drivers
- (remaining cases accounted for other categories of vehicles as per enforcement records)
Authorities said the drive targeted high-risk traffic zones across the city during night hours.
Police also released details of Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels recorded among offenders:
- 171 offenders: 51–100 BAC
- 91 offenders: 30–50 BAC
- 73 offenders: 101–150 BAC
- 40 offenders: 151–200 BAC
- 19 offenders: 201–250 BAC
- 13 offenders: 300 and above BAC
- 10 offenders: 251–300 BAC
Officials noted that several offenders were found with dangerously high alcohol levels, posing serious risks to road safety.
Traffic police warned that offenders involved in fatal accidents while driving under intoxication will be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The provision classifies such offences as culpable homicide not amounting to murder, carrying:
- Up to 10 years imprisonment
- Fine as applicable under law
Authorities reiterated that Hyderabad traffic police will continue strict weekend enforcement drives to reduce accidents and ensure road safety. Citizens were urged not to drink and drive under any circumstances.
