Kolkata, June 7: Police conducted a raid at the residence of Trinamool Congress councillor Mohammad Jasimuddin in the Jorasanko area of central Kolkata on Sunday as part of an ongoing investigation, officials said.
Officers from Jorasanko Police Station, accompanied by Central forces, reached the councillor’s residence near College Street in the early hours of the day. While security personnel remained stationed outside, police attempted to enter the premises to question the councillor.
According to local sources, the police arrived at around 6 am. However, officials reportedly did not receive a response from inside the house and continued to wait outside.
The exact reason behind the operation was not officially disclosed. However, reports indicated that investigators wanted to question Jasimuddin in connection with a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
Jasimuddin represents Ward No. 39 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Local residents have previously raised concerns regarding alleged issues linked to real estate development activities in the area.
On Saturday, police arrested a person reportedly close to the councillor in connection with allegations of molesting a minor. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the case.
News of the police action drew local residents to the area, with several people gathering near the councillor’s residence. Police maintained security at the location to prevent any untoward incidents.
The development comes amid a series of actions involving elected representatives of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. In recent years, several councillors have faced investigations and arrests in connection with allegations ranging from extortion to corruption and other offences.
Further details regarding Sunday’s operation are awaited.
