Hyderabad, June 11 (Maxim News): The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has intensified its preparedness measures ahead of the monsoon season by conducting refresher training programs for entomology field staff to strengthen the prevention and control of mosquito borne diseases, including dengue, malaria, and chikungunya.
The training sessions were organized by the GHMC Metropolitan Surveillance Unit (MSU) from June 9 to June 11. The initiative aimed to enhance the skills of field personnel who play a key role in identifying and eliminating mosquito breeding sources across the city.
A total of 900 participants attended the program. The trainees included health officials, Assistant Medical Officers of Health (AMOHs), Senior Entomologists, Ward Entomology Supervisors (WESs), and field staff from the Secunderabad, Golconda, Charminar, Shamshabad, Khairatabad, and Rajendranagar zones.
The MSU team conducted the sessions in five batches to ensure effective training and wider participation. The program focused on strengthening field level surveillance and improving rapid response mechanisms during the monsoon season, when mosquito breeding typically increases.
GHMC Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Amar Singh chaired the training program. Additional Director (Health) Dr. K. Padmaja attended as the chief guest.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Amar Singh emphasized that field staff serve as the first line of defense against dengue and other vector borne diseases. He urged them to remain vigilant and ensure effective implementation of mosquito control measures at the ground level.
Dr. Padmaja highlighted the importance of pre monsoon awareness campaigns, capacity building initiatives, and coordinated action among health departments. She stressed that strong surveillance, timely interventions, and regular reviews are essential to prevent disease outbreaks during the rainy season.
Focus on Mosquito Control and Public Awareness
The training covered a wide range of technical and operational subjects. Participants received guidance on identifying and eliminating mosquito breeding sites, conducting anti larval operations, implementing fogging measures, and ensuring the safe use of larvicides and insecticides.

The sessions also included training on entomological surveillance, maintenance of field records, outbreak response protocols, monitoring mechanisms, and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities aimed at increasing public awareness.
Officials said the training would help improve the efficiency of field teams and strengthen the city’s preparedness against seasonal disease outbreaks.
GHMC reiterated its commitment to protecting public health through continuous capacity building, robust surveillance systems, and effective mosquito control operations. The civic body also appealed to residents to cooperate with field staff and maintain clean surroundings to prevent mosquito breeding during the monsoon season.
