Beirut, June 20: An Israeli airstrike hit the Jabal al Rafee area near Sajd in southern Lebanon shortly after a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel came into effect on Friday, according to media.
The ceasefire took effect at 4 pm local time. However, the reported strike came soon after the truce began, raising fresh tension in the region.
Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem said the group would respond with weapons if Israel attacked again. He said threats would not weaken Hezbollah and claimed attempts to eliminate the group had failed.
In a televised speech on Al Manar, Qassem said Israel would have to withdraw from every part of Lebanese land. He also accused Israel of trying to weaken the resistance movement and block reconstruction in conflict-hit areas.
Qassem said Hezbollah’s weapons were aimed only at Israel and called on Israel to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Earlier, Hezbollah MP Ibrahim al Moussawi said the group would continue to follow the ceasefire agreement as long as Israel also respected its terms.
Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Public Health Emergency Operations Center said Israeli attacks since March 2 had killed 3,980 people and injured 12,001 others.
