Hyderabad, June 20: The BJP on Saturday claimed that Rahul Gandhi is losing support within the Congress and used Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s reported remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sharpen its attack on the opposition leader.
BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said Tharoor’s comments on Modi’s handling of the seafarers issue before US President Donald Trump contradicted Rahul Gandhi’s position on the matter.
Poonawalla said it was embarrassing for the Congress that Tharoor had praised Modi’s articulation of India’s stand on the issue. He also claimed that Tharoor had earlier appreciated Modi’s vision, dynamism and oratory.
BJP says Shashi Tharoor remarks weaken Rahul Gandhi
The BJP leader also targeted the Congress over projecting Rahul Gandhi as a future prime ministerial candidate. He said some Congress leaders and alliance partners do not appear to accept Gandhi’s leadership.
Poonawalla alleged that Rahul Gandhi had lost public support and the backing of people once considered close to him. He named writer Ramachandra Guha and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor while making the claim.
He further said that some allies, including the Left and the DMK, do not support Gandhi’s leadership. According to Poonawalla, this reflects a wider lack of confidence in Rahul Gandhi within the opposition camp.
The BJP’s remarks came as the political battle between the ruling party and the Congress continued to intensify over leadership, national issues and the opposition’s criticism of the central government.
The Congress has not yet responded officially to the BJP’s latest remarks on Tharoor and Rahul Gandhi.
