Hyderabad, June 20: Medical associations in Telangana have opposed a State government proposal to raise the retirement age of senior faculty in government medical colleges from 65 to 70 years, warning that the move would hurt career growth for young doctors.
Senior residents and postgraduate medical students said the proposal would delay promotions, block recruitment and reduce opportunities for specialists already serving in government medical institutions.
The Telangana Senior Residents Doctors Association said more than 1,500 senior residents across the State could launch an indefinite protest and strike if the government issues an order on the proposal.

The Telangana Junior Doctors Association said the move would obstruct academic advancement, shrink job opportunities and affect the future of faculty recruitment in government medical colleges.
The Healthcare Reforms Doctors Association, Telangana, also opposed the proposal. It urged the State government to withdraw any move to extend the retirement age beyond 65 years and instead fill all vacant faculty posts.
The associations demanded immediate recruitment to vacant teaching posts across government medical colleges. They also sought timely promotions for eligible faculty and the creation of additional posts in newly established medical colleges.
In addition, the doctors suggested that retired professors could be given honorary mentorship, advisory or emeritus roles instead of extending the retirement age.
The proposal has triggered concern among young medicos, who fear it could affect academic leadership opportunities and slow down the entry of new faculty into the medical education system.
