Seychelles, June 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s strategic vision for the Indian Ocean region during his visit to Seychelles and introduced the MAHASAGAR initiative to deepen bilateral cooperation. The visit coincided with 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles and Seychelles’ independence celebrations.
During the visit, Modi described the Indian Ocean as a shared space and said regional security, stability and development require collective responsibility. The MAHASAGAR initiative aims to strengthen cooperation and expand opportunities across the maritime region.
MAHASAGAR Initiative Strengthens India Seychelles Partnership
Seychelles conferred its highest distinction, “Guardian of the Blue Horizon”, on Prime Minister Modi in recognition of his work in environmental conservation, climate action and support for developing island nations. Modi dedicated the honour to countries working to address climate challenges.
During the visit, India and Seychelles signed several agreements across sectors. The two sides agreed to cooperate in digital payments, education, skill development and broader areas including health, agriculture and maritime engagement. India’s Unified Payments Interface is also set to be introduced in Seychelles.
A professional and technical education centre supported by India was inaugurated to strengthen vocational training opportunities for youth in Seychelles. Leaders from both countries said the partnership would continue to focus on capacity building and long term development.
