India, June 28: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that she plans to return to Bangladesh this year despite legal and political challenges facing her and her party. She made the remarks in an interview published during the 77th foundation year of the Awami League.
Hasina, who has been living in India since leaving Bangladesh after political upheaval in 2024, said her decision was driven by what she described as the political aspirations of the people and the restoration of democracy. She stated that her return was not linked to personal ambition or pursuit of power.
She said she wanted to work for democratic values, rule of law and the vision of “Sonar Bangla” associated with Bangladesh’s founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Sheikh Hasina Criticises Legal Action Against Her
During the interview, Hasina described legal proceedings and judgments against her as politically motivated and unconstitutional. She alleged that Bangladesh’s judicial system was being used for political retaliation and criticised restrictions placed on her party, the Awami League.
Hasina also said she was not afraid of threats or punishment and referred to earlier attacks and personal losses she had experienced over the years. She said she had devoted her political life to Bangladesh and remained confident that the Awami League would continue as a political force.
Her remarks come at a time of continued political tensions in Bangladesh, where restrictions on Awami League activities remain in place and authorities have increased security measures ahead of politically sensitive events.
