The incident occurred around 4.55 a.m. near the Kankanady Police Station when the retaining wall gave way and crashed into the rear portion of a tile roof building that housed four rented families.
Mangalore Retaining Wall Collapse Under Investigation
Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Fire and Emergency Services Department carried out a search operation and rescued Balakrishna (40), Alka (14), and Anusha (11), who were trapped beneath the debris.
Police identified the deceased as Shantha (35) from Udupi and Anamika Chourasia (8) and Tanu alias Pari (4), both from Bihar.
According to police, Balakrishna’s family had been living in the house for the past eight months. His wife, Shantha, who died in the incident, worked at an ice cream factory in Adyar, Mangaluru.
Another family from Bihar had been residing in the building for nearly eight years. The family comprised Lalbabu, his wife Indu, and their four children. Two of their daughters lost their lives in the collapse.
Mangaluru Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said preliminary findings indicate that the retaining wall failed and collapsed onto the residential structure, causing the rear wall of the building to cave in.
He noted that retaining walls constructed on laterite or hilly terrain require deep foundations anchored to stable rock and proper drainage systems to prevent water accumulation. Without these measures, hydrostatic pressure during heavy rains can lead to structural failure.
Police have launched an investigation into the quality of construction and possible unauthorised excavation that may have weakened the structure. A criminal case will be registered against those found responsible after technical experts submit their findings.
Dakshina Kannada district in charge Minister U. T. Khader expressed condolences to the bereaved families. He directed officials to provide immediate compensation to the families of the deceased and instructed the Karnataka government to bear the medical expenses of the injured.
