Hyderabad: The United States has lifted export restrictions on Anthropic’s advanced AI models, Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, allowing the company to restore access to foreign users after weeks of government imposed controls.
Anthropic announced that access to both models will resume from Wednesday after the US Department of Commerce informed the company that export licensing requirements had been withdrawn.
Anthropic Restores AI Models After US Eases Restrictions
In a statement, Anthropic thanked its users for their patience and acknowledged those involved in restoring access to the AI models.
According to a letter from US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the restrictions were removed after Anthropic agreed to strengthen security measures, work with the government on safety standards for future AI models, and report malicious activities involving its technology.
The company had suspended access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 last month after the Trump administration directed it to block all foreign nationals, including its own overseas employees, from using the models. Anthropic said the government cited unspecified national security concerns, reportedly linked to potential vulnerabilities in Fable 5.
Last week, the company received approval to provide the models to US organisations responsible for operating and protecting critical infrastructure before broader access was restored.
The restrictions had added to tensions between Anthropic and the Trump administration. Earlier this year, the company sued the US Department of Defense after it was designated a supply chain risk over its stance against the military use of its AI systems without safeguards against mass surveillance or autonomous weapons.
The latest move comes as the US government increases oversight of advanced artificial intelligence. OpenAI recently announced that its GPT 5.6 model would initially be released only to a limited group of trusted partners following discussions with US authorities.
AI experts say the decision to lift restrictions reflects concerns that prolonged controls could create regulatory uncertainty and affect competition among leading AI developers.
