Kolkata, July 1: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra alleged that her office in Krishnanagar was attacked on Wednesday after protesters threw eggs and vegetables at the premises while she was inside the building.
Moitra claimed the protesters were linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party. She also shared a video on social media, alleging that police personnel present at the spot did not stop the protesters despite being informed about the incident.
Mahua Moitra attack sparks political row
In the video, Moitra said she had contacted senior police officials, including the Director General of Police. However, she alleged that the police remained passive while the protest continued.
She said the incident took place in her parliamentary constituency and declared that she would not leave her office. Moitra also questioned the response of the local police and alleged that authorities failed to protect her office.
Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the state authorities to ensure that First Information Reports are registered in every incident involving egg throwing against political opponents.
Reacting to the controversy, BJP West Bengal president Samik Bhattacharya distanced the party from such protests. He said throwing eggs was not a BJP tradition and advised party workers to avoid such actions. He added that such incidents could damage the party’s image.
The police have not yet issued a detailed statement on the allegations. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
